Paradoxically, snow will keep things warmer underground as it provides an insulating blanket against the low temperatures.

I now have a pair of gloves that combines finger cutoffs for button pushing with a flip over flap to cover all against the cold. Very nice for my activity here.  

Ice forms continue to interest me - there is such variety as the dynamics of temperature, wind, water movement and floating and suspended debris change.

Birds have begun to flirt along the canal - January is the month, as the daylight increases, that things begin to stir underground.
